\nWhite it the air<\/strong>
\nOutside it\u2019s been coming down for days
\nand days and days. It\u2019s nothing but
\npure white out there, white in the sky,
\nwhite is the ground, white it the air,
\nwhite white white. Driving to work I
\nsee a helicopter that comes so close
\nto ground that it just seems like
\nsome silly toy, but it
\ndisappears back into the white
\nsoon too, barely realizing it had ever
\nalmost left it. And who can tell me
\njust what is the source of
\nso much white? I hypothesize that it is
\nMoby Dick blown to bits at sea, Ahab\u2019s
\ngreat-great grandson with a torpedo shell,
\na horrific Nantucket Nor’wester
\nstrewing the incredible evidence
\neven to here in the land-locked prairies.
\nObsession would be destroyed in
\nsome magnificent catharsis like this\u2014
\na great explosion to decolour a canvas.
\nOr perhaps this is the result of some
\nproud deity\u2019s tantrum instead? Sheets
\nof loose leaf paper scattered, porcelain
\nplates smashed among ivory pigeons
\nand alabaster polar bears. I can’t see
\npast five feet up there anyways, so
\nwhat difference is it to me if it\u2019s heaven
\nor helicopters, pigeons or polar bears?
\nMaybe they are rearranging the moon
\nfor our next eclipse or adjusting
\nhoroscopes or hiding the little red ball
\nup their sleeve while we are distracted
\nwith these dancing half-shells of coconuts.
\nI worry that when all this begins to melt
\nI won’t be able to build an arc fast
\nenough and it will flood the Earth all over
\nagain and then it will only be good for those
\nhardy polar bears. But, of course,
\nthat could be wrong since of all those things
\nthe white could be, I\u2019ve never seriously considered
\nsimple frozen water. Too easy. Too simple.
\nAnd so it is with lamentable loss of aplomb
\nthat I witness this melt away with,
\nas it swells the banks of the river,
\nand then not with a bang today,
\nbut with a whimper tomorrow
\ninto the waters of Hudson Bay
\nwhich I will call the incredible ocean
